Southwark is located on the south bank of the Thames. Recently archaeologists have discovered evidence of prehistoric activity, such as burial mounds, and primitive ritual activity.
Southwark Towers is being replaced by a supertall skyscraper called the Shard of Glass. This will stand at 1017 feet tall, with 72 floors, with an additional 15 radiator floors in the roof, making it the tallest building in the country.

The church owned much of Southwark originally, Southwark Cathedral being an obvious relic of a monastic London.
In 1599, the Globe Theatre was built on the Bankside. It was built by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It was destroyed by fire on the 29th of June, 1613. A modern replica simply known as the Globe has in recent years been built near the original site. |
